The primary advantage of LASIK is the typically painless, rapid recovery. LASIK requires only a minimal amount of downtime and provides clearer vision in as little as 24 hours – although it may take longer in your case.
LASIK Recovery Tips
To recover properly, follow these tips:
- In the hours immediately following LASIK, keep your eyes closed as much as possible to allow them to rest and heal.
- Do not rub your eyes in the three to four weeks after LASIK.
- Wear sunglasses or protective eyewear if you are outside and there is a chance dust, wind, smoke or other irritants can make contact with your eyes.
- Use preservative-free artificial tear drops when your eyes feel dry and at the frequency recommended by Dr. Levinson.
- Don’t let water get in your eyes for the first week after LASIK.

Downtime after LASIK
Although recovery varies by patient, you can generally expect:
After Surgery: Your vision may be blurry or hazy and your eyes may feel dry and irritated for several hours after LASIK. You will wear clear eye shields or goggles when you leave the surgery center to protect your eyes. You must plan for someone to drive you home.
The First 48 Hours: The next day after your LASIK procedure, you will have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Levinson. We’ll answer any questions you have about what to expect while you heal.
Your vision will improve over the next several days. Many patients return to work within 24-48 hours. You may continue to experience dry eyes and discomfort. You may also feel a dull ache around your eyes. Take any medications or eye drops as instructed by Dr. Levinson.
The First Few Days: Avoid strenuous exercise, non-contact sports or recreational activity that poses a risk of injury to your eyes.
Three Months: Your results should be final by now, but could take as long as six months. You should expect realistic results, and although you may not achieve perfect 20/20 vision after LASIK, your uncorrected eyesight should be significantly improved. During this time, you should consult Dr. Levinson before playing any contact sports, swimming or participating in any activity that could lead to serious eye injury.
To make sure you are healing correctly and that your procedure is successful, you’ll come back to see Dr. Levinson at one week, two months, six months and one year after your LASIK procedure. Our team is also available to you at any point after your surgery if you have a concern or experience a complication.
